The Growing Things

The First Avenue headline
punched me in the eye.
We're Colder than Siberia!
Terrific.
Basic black will be in
this season
for the death
of summer.
It suits me
but I worry
about the
huddled basil
the reaching tomato starts
and
the crawling squash
trying to be
in the garden-bed
front yard.
The angry sky
and refrigerated ground
sing in key
with my glass half empty
harmony
but the growing things
need long lighted days
and warm still mornings
that walk through late May
through the door into June.
Don't die, little ones.
Nothing here is promised
but every day
I watch you
and keep safe
my dying thread
of hope
locked in
the veins
of your leaves.

I think about them each day. The sturdy rosemary will surely overtake everything eventually, but I still have hopes for the tomato and squash. The peppers, well, I think they will simply be pretty plants in our front yard. Or food for our neighborhood's suicidal squirrels.

The cats have all gone missing.
The squirrels want to kill themselves.
The crows riot in the same empty tree every evening.
The summer is dead.

is it that cold? Do I need to pack winter clothes?????

Poly D. is starting to wonder what she may have gotten herself into... A summer without summer???? No, no. I could not survive!

What are the temps?

It's a balmy 48 degrees today and monday we had some wonderful sidways rain. The upside is that this place is a verdant riot. They do say it will be 70 and sunny this weekend. It'll probably be nice in July. It usually is.

I've seen that kind of rain before. It's quite magical!

Congratulations. Don't drink the sweet stuff.

I drink the following:

gin and tonic
vodka tonic
sea breeze
vodka n grapefruit
tequila sunrises (but they're a bit too sweet for me since I started going gray)
Margaritas

That's really 'bout it as far as my taste for alcohol goes. Sometimes I dig some beer and red wine (not mixed of course)

Tonight it will be gin.
